The Role of Forests in Creating Clean Water
Water feels abundant in places like Wānaka. Snow melts from the surrounding mountains, streams weave through valleys, and lakes sparkle in the sunlight. But the clarity and purity of that water doesn’t happen by accident. Behind the scenes, forests play a crucial role in capturing, filtering, and protecting the water we rely on every day.
The Forest’s Filtration System
When rain falls in the forest, the canopy of leaves slows the rain. The forest floor acts as a natural filter, trapping sediment & filtering pollutants like nutrients, which improve water quality & reduces the need for expensive water treatment. By the time water reaches underground aquifers or nearby streams, it is significantly cleaner.
Without the forests, rainwater would run quickly over the ground, carrying soil & pollutants into waterways. Tree roots stabilise the soil and create pathways in the ground that allows water to soak deeper into the earth. This process reduces the risk of flooding.
Lake Wānaka
In places with pristine lakes like Wānaka, the surrounding forests and alpine vegetation play an essential role in maintaining the lake’s remarkable clarity.
The water that fills Lake Wānaka begins high in the mountains. Snowmelt, rainfall, and glacier-fed streams flow down through valleys, forests, and wetlands before eventually reaching the lake.
Because so much of this landscape remains protected — especially within Mount Aspiring National Park — the water stays very clean along the way.
For visitors to the area, it is important to recognise, the cool stream, the mossy forest floor underfoot, and the towering native trees above are all part of a living water system that has been intertwined for thousands of years.
When you walk through the forests around Wānaka, you’re not just travelling through beautiful scenery — you’re moving through the natural infrastructure that helps create the region’s clean water.
Protecting and restoring forests is therefore one of the most effective ways to safeguard clean water supplies. It’s a solution that works quietly, continuously, and naturally.
Alongside our forests WAI Wānaka are doing their part to protect our water from the pollutants caused by human infrastructure, recreation & more. You can learn more about their research, educational & community programmes in our region here.
