A guide turns the Rob Roy Glacier Track into much more than a walk. Your local guide explains the landscape, native forest, wildlife, geology and changing glacier environment while managing transport, weather decisions, timing and safety. The drive to the start of the walk is on a gravel road and crosses a number of streams which can be challenging to navigate.

Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots and layered clothing suitable for changing alpine weather, a waterproof jacket, and a sunhat.

Even on sunny days, conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Bring a day pack and water bottle. Don’t forget your camera or phone (we promise you'll want photos!)

We supply walking poles (if needed) lunch and refreshments on the trip.

The guided hike covers approximately 10 kilometres return, takes around 4 hours and gains about 470 metres in elevation. It is suitable for people with moderate fitness who are comfortable walking uphill and over uneven forest tracks. Children 8+ are welcome. Regular stops are included, and the group travels at a manageable pace.

The day includes the Matukituki Valley, glacier-fed rivers, farmland, a swing bridge, native beech forest, waterfalls, alpine vegetation and views of the Rob Roy hanging glacier and surrounding Southern Alps. Often we see the world's only Alpine parrot, the Kea.

The experience is generally best during the warmer months, when conditions and road access allow.  We need to consider snow conditions to plan for any risk of avalanches which could inhibit us getting to the final look out. Mountain weather can change quickly, so availability remains subject to track, road and weather conditions. Contact us for current information when planning your visit.

Roy’s Peak is a longer, more exposed climb known for elevated lake views. Rob Roy offers greater landscape variety over a shorter distance, including rivers, native forest, waterfalls and views of a hanging glacier. It is an excellent choice for visitors seeking an immersive national park experience rather than a sustained exposed ascent.

The experience includes pickup and drop-off from Wānaka accommodation, return transport, a professional local guide trained in first aid, walking poles if required, refreshments and lunch. Guides carry first-aid and communication equipment plus those little extras that make for a great day.  We do make a day of it so you get the maximum enjoyment from this incredible place.

Yes, our trips are family-friendly! Children need to be over 8 and comfortable walking on uneven terrain and accompanied by an adult.
