And on your drive back from Cardrona, keep your eyes peeled for the Kārearea (NZ Falcon) swooping through the valley! If you are not a mountain adventurer, stroll along the lakefront boardwalk and spot the crested Grebe on your way to the Wānaka marina. From here, step on board an Eco Adventures Wānaka cruise across the lake to the island sanctuary of Mou Waho. During your guided walk to the top of the island, spot the flightless Buff Weka foraging on the forest floor. This island sanctuary is also home to the Mountain Stone Weta. Winter is no problem for these critters, as they are the world’s largest freeze-tolerant insect.
